Winterize Your Skin

Winter changes just about everything in our routine: it’s dark by 4:30 p.m., it’s freezing outside – even the house feels colder – we have to drive more carefully after a snow or ice storm – our clothes are bulkier. Did you know that your skincare routine should change, too? The cold, dry air can wreak havoc on our skin, so it’s important to take a little extra care with ourselves this time of year.

My biggest tip? Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Chances are, your body needs extra hydration in the winter. If you feel drier than usual, or like you want to crawl out of your own skin because you’re so itchy, it’s time to up the ante a little.

Sometimes you just need to cozy up with your robe & sheet mask.

Swap your regular body lotion to a richer body creme, or add a few drops of a body oil into your lotion. If your daily facial moisturizer doesn’t seem to be cutting it, and you find yourself re-applying throughout the day, a few small adjustments can make a world of difference. The easiest may be just swapping your moisturizer for a different formula. If you typically use a combination to oily formula, try using a normal to dry one in the colder months. You could also add a drop or two of a facial oil into your moisturizer, or pair a hydrating gel with your regular moisturizer.

In addition to adding richer moisturizers into your routine, don’t forget about the power of exfoliation. If you find yourself particularly itchy, it’s likely because you need to exfoliate the dead, dry skin at the surface. Otherwise, you’re trying to hydrate dead skin – your moisturizer isn’t actually penetrating the surface, which is why you feel like you need to keep re-applying. Example: you apply lip balm throughout the entire day, but your lips still feel chapped. Find yourself a good body scrub and a gentle facial exfoliant to use each a couple times weekly.

The human body is made mostly of water, so don’t forget to hydrate from the inside out and drink plenty of water throughout the day. Additionally, sleeping with a humidifier in your room will also prevent the air in your house from getting too dry. I can always tell when my house is too dry because my scalp is so itchy I could scratch right through it, and I’m getting little electric shocks every time I touch something.
